How to Verify You Own Your Google Business Profile
28 April 2026 · Stellr Team
Before you can manage your Google reviews, you need to own your Google Business Profile. Here's how to claim and verify it.
Step 1: Search for Your Business
Go to business.google.com and search for your business name. If it already exists (someone may have created it, or Google auto-generated it from Maps data), you'll see it. If not, you'll need to create a new listing.
Step 2: Claim Your Profile
Click "Claim this business" or "Own this business?" If it's unclaimed, Google will walk you through verification. If someone else has claimed it (a former employee, a previous owner), you'll need to request access.
Step 3: Verify Your Identity
Google offers several verification methods:
- Phone call or text: Google sends a verification code to your business phone number
- Email: If your business email is associated with the listing
- Postcard: Google mails a postcard with a code to your business address (takes 5–14 days)
- Video recording: For some businesses, Google may ask you to record a short video showing your location
Step 4: Complete Your Profile
Once verified, fill out every field: business hours, photos, menu, services, description. A complete profile ranks higher in search and gives customers the information they need. Make sure your public listing looks professional.
Step 5: Start Managing Reviews
Now you can respond to reviews, post updates, and view insights. If you're planning to use a review management service, you'll typically add them as a Manager on your profile — they can respond to reviews on your behalf without having owner access.
Taking control of your Google Business Profile is the essential first step to protecting your online reputation.
