How to Spot and Avoid Fake Review Services

6 April 2026 · Stellr Team

The review management industry has its share of scammers. Some services promise to "boost" your rating overnight with fake reviews. Here's how to spot them — and why you should avoid them.

Red Flags

  • "Guaranteed 5-star reviews": No legitimate service can guarantee review ratings
  • "100 reviews in 30 days": Suspiciously high volumes in short timeframes usually means fake accounts
  • Very cheap pricing: If it costs $50 for 20 reviews, they're not from real customers
  • No review collection strategy: If they don't explain HOW they get reviews, they're probably faking them
  • No response management: Services focused only on adding reviews (not managing your profile holistically) are suspicious

The Risks

Google is sophisticated at detecting fake reviews. The consequences of getting caught are severe:

  • All fake reviews removed (often genuine ones get swept up too)
  • A warning label may appear on your Google listing
  • Your listing can be suspended or removed entirely
  • FTC fines for deceptive practices (in the US, up to $50,000 per violation)

What Legitimate Services Look Like

A legitimate review management service:

  • Uses real QR codes or links to collect reviews from actual customers
  • Responds to reviews professionally
  • Provides transparent reporting
  • Never guarantees specific ratings or review counts
  • Has case studies or references from real businesses

Do Your Research

Before hiring any service, ask them directly: "How do you get reviews?" If the answer isn't "from your actual customers through a collection system," walk away. Your reputation — and your Google listing — aren't worth the risk.

Choose a service that focuses on genuine review growth through smart systems, not shortcuts.
