Fake reviews are frustrating and damaging. Whether they're from a disgruntled ex-employee, a competitor, or a random troll, they can tank your rating unfairly. Here's what you can actually do about them.
How to Identify Fake Reviews
Look for these red flags:
- The reviewer has no profile photo and only one review
- The review mentions things that don't match your business (wrong menu items, services you don't offer)
- Multiple negative reviews appear on the same day
- The language is generic and could apply to any business
- The reviewer has never visited your location
How to Report a Fake Review to Google
Go to your Google Business Profile, find the review, click the three dots, and select "Report review." Choose the reason (spam, fake, conflict of interest, etc.) and submit. Google will review your report within a few days to a few weeks.
What Google Will and Won't Remove
Google will remove reviews that violate their policies — spam, fake content, off-topic rants, or reviews with personal attacks. They will NOT remove a review simply because you disagree with it or because the customer is being unfair. A legitimate bad experience, even if exaggerated, usually stays.
What If Google Won't Remove It?
If your report is denied, respond to the review professionally. Explain calmly that you have no record of the reviewer's visit and invite them to contact you directly. Other customers reading this will see your professionalism.
You can also focus on building up your positive review count to dilute the impact. A single fake review among 100 genuine ones has minimal effect on your overall rating.
Prevent Future Fake Reviews
Monitor your reviews daily so you can catch and report fake ones quickly. A review management tool can alert you instantly when new reviews appear, so nothing slips through the cracks.
