Best Times to Ask Customers for Google Reviews
21 April 2026 · Stellr Team
When you ask for a review matters almost as much as how you ask. Ask at the wrong moment, and you'll get ignored. Ask at the right moment, and your conversion rate doubles.
The Peak Satisfaction Moment
The best time to ask is at the moment of highest satisfaction — immediately after a positive experience. For restaurants, this is right after the customer compliments the food, when they're paying the bill after a great meal, or as they're leaving with smiles on their faces.
During the Visit (Best)
Having a QR code on the table means customers can leave a review while they're still at your restaurant. This is the highest-conversion method because they're in the moment. They're sitting with their phone, they've just eaten, and they're happy.
Immediately After (Good)
If you collect phone numbers or emails, a message 1–2 hours after their visit can work well. The experience is still fresh, but they've had time to settle in at home. Keep the message short: "Thanks for visiting! If you enjoyed your meal, we'd love a quick Google review: [link]"
The Next Day (Okay)
After 24 hours, conversion rates drop significantly. The emotional connection to the experience fades, and the customer is back in their routine. A next-day follow-up can still work, but expect lower response rates.
Times to AVOID Asking
- When the customer is clearly in a rush
- When there's been a service issue (even if resolved)
- At the end of a long wait
- Via multiple follow-up messages (one is enough)
The Passive Ask
QR codes on tables, signage near the exit, and printed prompts on receipts are "always on" review requests that don't require staff involvement. They catch customers at whatever moment they feel like leaving a review, with zero pressure.
Combine the passive ask with occasional verbal prompts from staff for maximum review volume.
