What to Do When You Get a Bad Google Review
7 May 2026 · Stellr Team
Your heart sinks. A one-star review just appeared on your Google listing. Before you fire off an angry response or try to get it deleted, take a breath. Here's what to do.
Step 1: Don't React Immediately
The worst responses are written in the heat of the moment. Wait at least 30 minutes before responding. Read the review again with fresh eyes. Is there any truth to what they're saying?
Step 2: Assess If It's Legitimate
Is this a real customer with a real complaint? Or is it a fake review from a competitor? If it's fake, you can flag it for removal. If it's real, you need to address it head-on.
Step 3: Respond Professionally
A professional response to a negative review can actually win you customers. Potential customers reading your reviews will see how you handle criticism. A calm, empathetic response shows maturity.
Your response should:
- Acknowledge the customer's experience
- Apologise for what went wrong (without being defensive)
- Explain what you're doing to fix it
- Offer to continue the conversation offline

Step 4: Fix the Actual Problem
A bad review is free market research. If three customers mention slow service, you have a staffing problem. If food quality complaints spike on weekends, investigate your weekend kitchen team. Use the feedback to get better.

Step 5: Bury It With Great Reviews
One bad review among fifty great ones barely registers. The best defence against negative reviews is a consistent stream of positive ones. Focus your energy on getting more reviews rather than obsessing over the bad one.
